Located on the banks of the River Wear, the development of Riverside Sunderland is regenerating the heart of Sunderland’s city centre by injecting it with vibrant places to work, live and enjoy.
In transforming this former industrial site into a state of the art, sustainable community, the construction of Maker and Faber has been an integral element. Designed and delivered by Ryder Architecture, Maker comprises 7,800sqm of office space across five floors, and Faber is 6,750sqm across four floors.
Both developments have been strategically positioned in key areas of the city. Maker connects Keel Row, a new pedestrian path from the city centre to the Stadium of Light, and Faber neighbours the City Hall with sweeping views of the River Wear.
Using a combination of Ibstock’s Millhouse Blend and Olde English Grey to achieve the modern, yet classic exterior of exposed brick ensures that it is in keeping with the surrounding area and its industrial history.
The variation in shades of warm and cooler browns of Millhouse Blend brings depth to the project, adds a decorative element through the arrangement of the bricks, while also bringing the building to life amongst the surrounding city scape.
Olde English Grey is also a classic choice for Riverside Sunderland with its lighter hues adding a freshness to the architecture which reinforces the purpose of the entire regeneration project. The amalgamation of these two choices perfectly balances the industrial past with the modern, innovative future of the location.
