Clydebank East
The Clydebank East site is the first fully ‘net zero ready’ housing development from Scotland’s West Dunbartonshire Council. The project, which comprises of 89 dwellings, made up of both houses and flats, saw groundwork begin in January 2023, and its first set of residents welcomed in autumn 2024.
When the land was first identified, it lay isolated from nearby residential communities, surrounded by industrial and commercial properties, edged by railway lines and busy roads. This has provided a great opportunity to create a development that boasts a strong visual identity and individual character. Its fresh, modern and inviting look acting as a catalyst for further developments around the site, contributing to the cultural and economic strength of the area.
The development has a strong active urban frontage on its main corner, at the Mill Road and Glasgow Road Junction, moving onto a central cluster of terraced houses, followed by a secondary frontage that clearly defines the boundary between public and private zones. Its western and northern most edges then go on to employ a much-reduced density.
The site benefits from a unified architectural approach, thanks to the use of a largely two-tone brick scheme, using Ibstock’s Arden Weathered Grey and Himley Ebony Black Bricks.
The Ibstock Himley Ebony Black Brick option enhances the visual robustness of the development. Nodding to its setting within a large industrial urban context, the choice of colour achieves a cohesive look in keeping with the project’s location. With the black hue conveying a sense of solidity, durability and resilience, connoting community.
The addition of the Ibstock Arden Weathered Grey Brick adds a welcome contrast, providing a lighter and warmer visual element, emphasising its neighbourly environment. Together the contrasting tones allow a cohesive yet interesting aesthetic, avoiding monotony over its 80-plus units.
This ties in with the project’s place-making approach, with its developers and architects keen to create an open, community driven development. While there is a clear designation for private gardens, the build offers a semi-public amenity space and an open public green space.
To achieve an eye-catching and impactful element, Ibstock’s Glazed (colour) Bricks were also used to deliver added dimension and difference around the doorways of the flats on the Clydebank development too.
With sustainability front of mind, the homes benefit from a communal air source heat pump, super insultation, and triple-glazing. The use of Ibstock Bricks also supports the environmentally friendly nature of the project too.
Uniquely beautiful, yet long lasting, these bricks are low maintenance and help to support a circular economy. With a 150+ year lifecycle, the bricks have one of the lowest embodied carbon of any building material over the course of their lifetime and are completely recyclable at end of life.
